Popular media and pundits alike are praising President-Elect, Barack Obama and his campaigners for taking his message to the internet. Much of Obama’s skills and experience in community organizing have been taken online. This election has definitely been history in the making, in more than one way. The successful linkage of technology, namely the internet, and politics has been proven effective in this election. There are countless benefits to the use of the internet for political gains including targeted demographics, inexpensive advertising, and increased mobilization of resources.
The increased recognition and use of popular internet sites, such as YouTube, highlight the many social affordances that technology serves especially in the political sphere. There have been many ways in which both political campaigns have applied modern politics to evolving technologies, but politics and technology have been evolving reciprocally. The increased use of the internet for political purposes will re-define some social relationships and norms. New types of social interactions will evolve from increased use as will traditional relationships adapt to these new forms.
